act2 is a 7-year long energy-related project (2006-2012) supported by the European Commission. It is part of the Concerto Initiative supervised by the DG Energy and Transport within the 6th Framework Research Programme.
The project fits in the climate and energy policies developed in the 5 act2 communities. It promotes the large-scale energy efficiency integration in new constructions and refurbishments as well as the mainstreaming of renewable energy systems.
act2 must be understood as a mean for the 5 communities to rekindle the ambition of particularly shining past experiences, like Kronsberg for Hannover (act n°2), and to invite every local actor to promote a better energy use (act too).
Hannover and Nantes are the 2 demonstration communities. They both aim at applying high energy performances in districts under urban renewal.
As associated cities with various backgrounds in energy policy and sustainable urban planning, Koszalin, Malmö and Newcastle collaborate to the project to foster know-how exchange and to disseminate respective good practices locally implemented.
The collaboration between the 13 act2 partners is designed in the way to develop an integrated energy strategy, balanced between demonstration projects taking place in Hannover and Nantes, the monitoring of their performances and, for associate cities as well, applied research, training and dissemination activities (see project architecture below).
