Energy-efficient constructions and refurbishments, as well as the implementation of renewable energy systems was the core of act2 project. Demonstration activities took place in Hannover and Nantes in clearly defined urban area; the Concerto districts.
The City of Hannover and Nantes Métropole Urban Community, as the two local coordinators of demonstration activities, had both identified districts under urban renewal to apply advanced energy standards in housings, public and tertiary buildings.
While Hannover exclusively led energy efficient refurbishments, partners in Nantes worked on both new constructions and the existing stock.
In this respect, the 2 demonstration programmes account together for more than 130,000 m2 of energy-efficient building, and the following renewable energy sources will be used :
• solar thermal and photovoltaic in both Hannover and Nantes;
• wood energy in Hannover
• geothermal heat pumps and waste-to-energy district heating in Nantes.
Pilot districts were Ahlem, Hainholz, Herrenhausen, Limmer, Nordstadt, Vahrenwald and Vinnhorst. Key figures relative to these districts are the following ones:
• 2,240 hectares
• 71,400 inhabitants
• 25,500 employees (subject to social insurance contribution)
• 40,500 apartments

The pilot area in Nantes was the Ile de Nantes district.
Energy efficiency measures and renewable energy systems implemented within act2 project demonstrated the ambition given to the urban renewal led in the very heart of Nantes conurbation.
