The demonstration projects are running in the ‘Concerto Districts’ of Hainholz, Limmer, Herrenhausen, Ahlem, Nordstadt, Vinnhorst and Vahrenwald. In Hannover the sole focus is on the refurbishment of older buildings.

Demonstration activities in Hannover

In Hannover's Concerto districts, the majority of the housing stock consists of older houses for one or two families. Poorly insulated, and with old-fashioned heating installations, these buildings use more energy than necessary and, after retrofitting, will save on fossil fuels such as gas and coal and thus reduce CO2 emissions. These retrofitting measures and the use of renewable energy sources for electricity and heating thus make a significant contribution to climate protection.

Various partners are involved in the project, such as the Spar- und Bauverein eG and Gundlach & Co. KG housing associations. Further private investors such as owners of detached and semi-detached houses should take part in the project through to 2011. Hannover City Council is itself participating with the installation of biomass heating plants, the retrofitting of a primary school and a cultural centre (former school building) in its own building stock.
