Training activities

Local training courses for different vocational areas aimed to improve qualification and quality assurance in retrofitting. A training concept set up by an expert group was implemented with the first six courses. Additionally, the first Passive House training event concerning retrofitting was held in Hannover.

Energy efficiency through local training

Hannover's local training activities aimed to develop training measures for the planning, operation and maintenance of renewable energy systems, assisted in the implementation of an advanced energy efficiency standard of retrofitting, and developed skills in retrofitting construction. The local training courses improved the skills of those involved and ensure the quality of work in the foreseen demonstration sites. The measure addressed all levels from planning to construction. The target groups of the local training courses in Hannover were:
  • plumbing companies, engineers and technicians
  • investors, builders and contractors.

Initially an expert group was formed for the training events in Hannover. These experts were involved in the local ‘act2 training actions' meetings in Hannover, where training needs, partners and possible cooperations were identified, then collated and summarised by target . A training concept was elaborated containing topics, target groups, co-operations as well as the schedule.

“act 2 briefings", Hannover

During the first 18 months of the project several short-term training courses (‘act2 briefings') were carried out with nearly 50 participants from the actors in the demonstration projects:

1. Training for the tenant consultants (how to support tenants before, during and after the energy efficiency modernisation, low-currency support for tenants); 4 hours

2. The craft workers on the demonstration project were trained twice in two groups (total of 4 training sessions) on quality assurance (thermal bridges, details, blower door checks, examples, hydraulic calibration of heating and ventilation systems); 5 hours each

a. Before the retrofitting work began: the aim of these training events was to explain the instruments of quality assurance in the act2 demonstration projects and to highlight the most frequent mistakes.

b. Training related to the first blower door check (airtightness check) to identify defects or mistakes with relevance to further work.

Low Energy House site visit and training event

Furthermore, three Passiv Haus training events  on energy efficient retrofitting of buildings were held in Hannover. The target groups were architects and engineers involved in the demonstration projects along with engineers from Hannover City Administration. The first event was in 3 blocks comprising 7 days in total; the second and third were in 4 blocks totalling 9 days. During this training event the Passiv Haus calculation method was demonstrated, learned and discussed with regard to the special needs of the demonstration projects. Three excursions to Passiv Haus retrofitting project sites were made to emphasise the training content and the practical background.

The final Passiv Haus training event ended in April 2009.

Further activities - training session on a workshop basis

Workshop on 30 August 2007

On 30 August 2007 a workshop was held in Hannover entitled ‘From Low Energy House to Lowest or Zero Energy House - workshop on barriers and obstacles in the process of energy efficiency refurbishment of multi-occupancy buildings'.

More than 20 stakeholders plus representatives of the act2 project came together, both to identify and list the existing barriers and obstacles and also and especially to discuss the main topics, find solutions and identify helpful tools or examples of them. Examples were given of experiences with the demonstration projects. The main topics discussed were: financing retrofitting and economic factors, tenants' involvement, acceptance and information, transparency, lack of information and know-how and interaction. The participants agreed on a list of recommendations at the conclusion of a fruitful workshop
