Demonstration projects in Nantes account for about 80,000 m² of new buildings. They set a new energy ambition which aims at being applied on the whole Ile de Nantes district.
The act2 demonstration activities in Nantes are focused on the Ile de Nantes district, a 340 hectares-wide area where the energy is at the heart of the urban renewal led: advanced energy standards in new constructions , renewable energy systems and extensions of the district heating produced from waste incineration are all part of the local urban planning.

The Demonstration programme in Nantes accounts for about 80,000 m² of new buildings with advanced energy standards (housing + offices). Many are connected to district heating from waste incineration. Specific decentralised renewable energy systems complete the programme.
Delivered by end 2011 :
the Forges Residence (J) (Developer: Atlantique Habitations), a 1,810 m² social residence for young workers delivered in October 2007
the Fonderies Headquarters (K) (Developer: LNH and CIL Atlantique), a 4,248 m² tertiary building delivered in August 2008
the Beaulieu PV Power Plant (H) (Developer: Nantes Métropole), a 180 kWp photovoltaic installation (with about 1,350 m² panels)
Living the Quays (C) (Developer: Aiguillon Construction), a 5,730 m² housing project (2 collective buildings + 4 individual houses) + a 41.2 m² solar thermal installation (covering part of the DHW demand)
Ile Rouge project (O) (Developer: ADI), a 3,069 m² tertiary building using a energy efficient efficient air-water heat pump
Terrain des Gendarmes (L) (Developer: SNI and SAMO) a 16,393 m² housing project, composed of 4 plots connected to the waste-to-energy district heating system and a 77 m² solar installation (covering part of the DHW demand)
Delivered in 2012:
Tripode (G) (Developer: Nexity) composed of 20,000 m² tertiary ans 10,860 m² housing projects, connected to the waste-to-energy district heating system
Prairie au Duc School (N) (Developer: Ville de Nantes), a 3,700 m² public equipment,
Wood Centre (B) (Developer: ADI, under madate given by Atlanbois), a 1,500 m² tertiary building dedicated to the promotion of wood as construction material and source of energy
Corto (P) (Developer: Harmonie Habitat), a 2,800 m² social housing project with a solar thermal installation (covering part of the DHW demand)
DT6-Noon (Q) (Developer: ADI), a project in 3 plots, combining offices (900 m²) and dwellings (6,400 m², including social housing) with a solar thermal installation (covering part of the DHW demand)
Via the demonstration projects, the aim of the act2 project consists in allowing a general upgrading of energy performances at the Ile de Nantes and Nantes Metropole scales. To do so, this approach was supported in different ways, such as the definition of sets of energy prescriptions, the promotion of district heating, the involvement of energy experts along the development of the district and the buildings and the co-funding of energy efficiency measures in social housing.
Whereas next regulation will impose BBC (*) standard in respectively 2011 and 2013 for newly deposited tertiary and housing projects, act2 partners anticipate this change in its demonstration programme and accompany developers in their quality assurance process (see the summary of SAMOA and Pouget Consultants analysis) .
(*) BBC stands for ‘Bâtiment Basse Consommation' (Low Consumption Building) and corresponds to the highest energy standard defined in French Thermal Regulation (50 kWh/m².a in housing projects and cut by 50% of the reference energy consumption in Tertiary buildings.
